Licorice’s Post-Partum Log – Week 1

About the best thing I can say about this week is that we survived, and it got better. The first few days after we came home were rough – I was physically and emotionally exhausted from labor and delivery, and trying to recover while sleeping in 2-3 hour chunks. The nurses compared delivery to a marathon, and if that was true, then the first week home was like someone keeping me on my feet and making me walk laps around a track for hours on end immediately after said marathon instead of letting me rest.

I’ve also been surprised by just how much rest my body wants. There were a few days where I felt adventurous and left the house for an hour or two, only to come home completely exhausted to clear signs that I’d overdone it. Apparently an acceptable level of activity for me is sitting on the couch with the baby all day, and while I can handle that, there’s a part of me that’s frustrated that I’m not yet ready for more.

The fun part of this week, though, has been seeing Ellie change. She’s still sleeping most of the day, but she has periods now where she’s awake and alert without being fussy, and you can tell that she’s starting to look at things and take it all in. I put her in front of a mirror on her play mat for a bit the other day and you could tell that it just blew her mind.

In a previous life, I worked on computers and spent all day sitting. Thanks to running, I've rebooted my career and am now a running and triathlon coach and soon-to-be physical therapist. I've also got the mind and spirit of an elite trapped in the body of a back-of-the-packer.

I’m a little late to the game, but your description of the week after delivery is spot on. Don’t feel bad if all you can do is sit on the couch. Do your best to enjoy staring at the little baby she’ll grow up quick and you’ll heal just as quickly.
