Cilantro’s Favorite Green Smoothie Recipe

For at least 5 years now, probably closer to 8 years, my green smoothies have been a source of entertainment for my family (and the topic for a little good-natured ribbing). With exception of when I’ve lived in Hungary without a blender, I’ve had a green smoothie every day. With a few minor adjustments, the recipe I’m sharing today is basically the same smoothie I first tried so many years ago. That alone should be prove that this is a delicious recipe. Even my family, notably wary of drinkable greens, admit that this is, indeed, pretty delicious.

Cilantro’s Green Smoothie


1 banana, frozen

1 t nutmeg

1 t vanilla

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

2 c spinach, raw


1. Put all ingredients in blender

2. Blend

3. Enjoy

This is my current favorite combination, but you could also add nut-butter: for a milder nut flavor, use 1-2 T of almond milk, for a stronger flavor, use 1-2 T peanut butter. I play with the spices too, sometimes substituting a few teaspoons of cinnamon or cacao powder for the nutmeg. I’ve even experimented with different fruits; I’ll add pineapple for a pina colada-esque post-run refresher or oranges for a creamsicle treat.
