Comment of the Week – 10.5.12

Another great week in the books here at Salty Running. As we close this one out, we look forward to the weekend when our favorite running momma of two adorable boys, Mint, heads to Chicago to nab that big PR. Mint’s been working her tush off for months and we can’t wait to track her through the streets of Chi-Town on her way to greatness. Be sure to check our Facebook page on Sunday for updates on her progress!

We also wish the best of luck to Jen P. who we featured in this week’s Ask-a-Salty who is also running Chicago. Heading to Minnesota, we wish a great race to both Salty reader Barb who’s running the full Twin Cities Marathon and Ariana Hilborn who’s going for it at the 10-Mile U.S.A. Championships, also in the Twin Cities. Lastly, we send great race vibes to Salty friend and guest poster, Greg S. (of Predawn Runner fame) whose looking to repeat his win at the Towpath Marathon also on Sunday. And of course, we wish all racing Salties tail winds and finish line smiles this weekend. Go get ’em! (And remember Clove’s post this morning is satire!)

This week’s winner is Kali, who posted this gem on Pepper’s The Difference Between Running and Racing a Marathon post:

I’ve always been one of those people who just runs marathons to finish and all of my road marathons were within the same 5-6 min, between 4:30 and 4:36. But I ran Akron this past weekend and decided I wanted to set a new PR and lined up with the 4:20 group, still super conservative. Everything just clicked and I realized I could run a lot more aggressively than I thought and ran a 4:11. Those last two miles were the fastest of the day and they did hurt! But it was SO absolutely worth it to go out there and really push myself. It was definitely the best marathon experience I’ve ever had!

Congrats, Kali! We are so impressed with your guts and perseverance to log that 20:00 PR! We at Salty Running are pretty sure a sub-4 is in your near future!

When Kali’s not logging mega-PRs or drafting awesome comments on Salty Running, this 26 year-old lifelong Clevelander is a retail pro. She started running to lose weight after graduating from Kent State and ran her first 5K in September 2009. She reached her weight loss goal of 90 lbs (!) the same day she began training for her first marathon, Columbus in 2010. She ran her second marathon in Chicago last October and afterwards a friend introduced her to the trails and ultrarunning. She ran her first 50K the following month and has been an ultra nut ever since. Her longest distance so far is the Mohican 50 miler, which she completed in June. Her next big distance goal is the 100K (~65 miles!), which she’s attempting next week! Other than running, Kali loves practicing yoga and hanging out with her boyfriend who just came back from South Korea where he was stationed in the Army.
