Catnip’s training log – week ending 5/4/2014

Well, postpartum running has been going pretty well so far and I refuse to let a metaphorical bump in the road get in the way: Toward the end of the week I started to experience some tightness or locking in my left leg which eventually prevented me from running Saturday and Sunday. I’m pretty sure it’s my own fault, the result of trying to pull one shoe off with the other foot without untying the laces. Dumb mistake!

However, I’m looking at this as just an opportunity to take a couple of rest days. Complete rest days are hard for me, especially when they are weekend days when I’m not rushing through the miles. Can anyone relate?

Anyway, here’s what I did accomplish (running-wise!) this week:

Monday: 7 miles/ 54:01 (treadmill). Ran 25 minutes tempo. Had loosely planned 20′ tempo, but had to use the bathroom after 16′ so I extended it to 25′. Covered 3.69 mi = 6:46 pace! Felt pretty good actually and could have gone longer and/or harder – but that’s how i want to feel right now, No need to flirt with overdoing things.

Tuesday: 6 miles/52:00. My parents were here to watch JB while I worked so I ran from the house and met them at the park. Felt tired, but it was warm enough to run shirtless!

Wednesday: 3.5 miles/30:50. Somehow had time to squeeze this in in the morning.Treadmill.

Thursday: 3.9 miles/36:00. Planned to run more, but the baby got hungry. Good thing I chose the treadmill! (My dad was watching the baby so I had a choice.) Considered doubling back with another run in the evening, but was having a good time hanging with the family.

Friday: 7 miles/52:46. Treadmill. I’ve been doing light tempo runs or a race at 5 day intervals for a few weeks now, but wanted to change things up a bit. Ran 4x mile a bit faster than recent tempos – 6:33, 6:23, 6:16, 6:16. Left leg tightened up between #2 and 3, but didn’t seem any worse running faster.

Saturday: Attempted a run with my usual Saturday morning group. Ran 3 minutes and had to stop. Disappointed, but not as frustrated or sad as I would have been a year ago.

Sunday: Wasn’t sure whether I should attempt to run, but I had no symptoms walking around the house or jogging around the living room, so I changed into running clothes and sportsbras (yes, plural) and went outside. Felt just fine for a minute or two, then mild tightness. Took another minute to consider whether it was going to be transient or not but decided to be safe and just went back home. I refuse to regret the day off.

Total: 27.4 miles

The 5k is my favorite race (16:56 PR) but I've got a score to settle with the marathon.

  1. What a bummer! I’m experiencing something similar this week and it stinks. The mornings are perfect for running and I have to spend my workout time inside on an elliptical. :/ But it’s better to be safe than sorry and at this stage of the comeback the payoff of a few days off or cross training is worth the minor inconvenience. In other news, you’re kicking butt on your workouts already! Nice work!!
