Catnip’s Training Log – week ending 5/18/14

After a few less than enjoyable runs toward the end of last week, I was starting to wonder if something was wrong and I needed to take some time off. Fortunately, this week started out with a great run Monday morning and that streak continued through Sunday. Yay!

Monday: 3.1 miles/27 minutes. Baby JB took an early morning nap, so I got some bonus miles on the treadmill before work.
6 miles/45:30 – tempo run! 3.25 miles averaging 6:36 pace.

Tuesday: 6 miles/53:11.  Felt sluggish due to the heat & humidity.

Wednesday: 8.3/1:11:39. Also ran about a mile in the morning but came home due to rain. Felt great on this PM run and was totally enthralled watching coverage of the storms in the area. I love maps. Did you know that there is a Spunkeytown, Ohio?

Thursday: 6 miles/52:00. Legs still feeling fresh.

Friday: 8 miles/1:02. On the treadmill, ran 3x mile with about 2 minutes jog rest: 6:24, 6:15, 6:10. I’ve been running slower than running calculators say I should based on my recent 5ks (19:07 4 weeks ago) but this felt challenging enough subjectively. Really don’t want to overdo things anyway. An hour of yoga in the evening.

Saturday: 11 miles/about 1:35?  Forgot to restart my watch after a road crossing so this is just an estimate. Longest run since October when I was 25 weeks pregnant. Had a good talk with my coach. I know I’m not ready for a structured plan yet, but we talked through a general idea of what I should be doing to get me ready — namely, don’t screw myself up!

Sunday: 4.5/39:40. Pretty sunny day. An hour of yoga in the afternoon.

Total: 54 miles.

I'm a 20-year veteran of competitive running, USATF certified coach, mom of a toddler -- and still trying to set PRs. I write about training from 5k to marathon, motherhood and competitive running, and the elite side of the sport. The 5k is my favorite race (16:56 PR) but I've got a score to settle with the marathon.
