Caraway’s Training Log, June 1-7 2018

This training week started out hot and humid, but suddenly the weather was ideal for running: 70 degrees and low humidity. I did my last few workouts before my 10k race on June 10th and tapered the mileage a little.

One of my favorite ways to still the runger: vegan “pizza” with hummus and fresh veggies.

Friday, June 1: 8x400m at interval pace with 200m recoveries. Total of about 8 km with warmup and cooldown. It was really, really hot, and I was glad I didn’t have more than 8 reps to do! Strength training afterward.

Saturday, June 2: Easy 6km jog. Feeling very over summer at this point. It can be 50 degrees and permanently cloudy again now.

Sunday, June 3: Less hot, but very very humid. All of my clothes and my hair were soaked completely through by the end of the workout, as if I’d been caught in a downpour. Of my own sweat. Lovely. Anyway, 16km long run with some at M pace. No problem.

Monday, June 4: Rest day.

Tuesday, June 5: 8km easy + strength training.

Wednesday, June 6: 2×800 at interval pace, 4×200 at repetition pace. This was a strange workout because I felt super sluggish on the warmup (even though it wasn’t even hot or humid!) but had no problem hitting faster paces.

Thursday, June 7: Again feeling very sluggish. About 6km easy with 6×15 second strides that were, as far as I can tell, actually not that slow. Taper madness?

Race day is on Saturday! The weather forecast is not promising – high 80’s, rain, and thunderstorms – but whatever happens, I hope to have fun.

  1. I just saw your post of several months ago about the parallels between music and athletic training. Very interesting. I thought I was the only one to have drawn these parallels. I put up a similar, but perhaps more specific post on my blog. Racing and concert performance are both essentially moments in time, performances…. where we try to bring it, the best of ourselves. The training has so many parallels.

    1. Hey, thanks for reading, and I like your post as well! Another Salty writer, Cayenne, is a professional musician and says she thinks of races as being like auditions (or sometimes recitals). Lots of similarities there for sure.
