Caraway’s Berlin Marathon Training Log, August 7-13

Six weeks to go until the Berlin Marathon. I’m trying to be mindful and stay in the moment to avoid freaking out. Sometimes even successfully! This was a good week because I got all my runs in and even felt like I could have done more.

Sunday 8/7:ย 7.5-mile progress calibration run. Not much to say about this one; I’ve done so many of these Sunday tempo runs that finding the right level of effort has become pretty automatic.

It’s picturesque where I run.

Monday 8/8:ย 15 miles. Was hot, but this was still my best long run so far because it only felt like a slog for about five minutes at the end. Also, it was the last long run! Am I relieved because I don’t necessarily enjoy long runs in the heat, or am I frightened because the next four weeks replace long runs with workouts like 12 miles at “marathon pace”? I can’t decide.

Tuesday 8/9: Rest day.

Wednesday 8/10: 5.5 miles easy.

Thursday 8/11: 8.5 miles total, with 4 miles of intervals on loops in the park. Dodging people and dogs is a standard part of this workout, but today the main challenge was trying not to step on the kamikaze striped field mice that kept running out of the bushes.

Friday 8/12: 6.2 miles easy. Legs feeling surprisingly good after the intervals ย yesterday: tired, but not heavy, sore, or dead.

Saturday 8/13: 4 miles easy + 1 hr. Pilates mat class.

Total: 46 miles

I'm a 41-year-old living in Berlin, Germany. I run because I can't not run. I write about training, mental training, momming, and the odd rant.

  1. I feel like a gif file of you dodging the mice would have been a fun addition to this post. ๐Ÿ™‚

You’re kicking training’s ass and yay for moving into the final few weeks of training (with less long runs and new workouts!) I feel like shifting gears throughout training like that is mentally helpful too

    1. Haha! mice gifs need to happen, I’m just not sure how…

I don’t feel like I’m kicking any ass, so thank you for the encouragement ๐Ÿ™‚ and yes it’s nice to shift gears once in a while. I was getting bored of doing the same workouts every week. the next few weeks are a bit lower mileage but much more intensity (cue scary music…dun dun DUN)
