Basil’s Bring-on-the-Taper Training Log – 1.5.2014

Before I tell you all about last week’s training, can I vent for a minute? While the folks in the Lower 48 are experiencing a record-breaking cold snap, we’re breaking out the flip-flops here in Alaska with a balmy 41 degrees for a high today! You guys, that NEVER happens in January. But that’s not what I wanted to whine about. I wanted to whine about the fact that OF COURSE it warmed up now it’s time to TAPER and I’m supposed to REST. Forty freaking one degrees–warmest since October–and I’m not supposed to run today!

Anyway, moving on. Last week actually brought pretty nice weather as well. But because the kiddos were still on break and my husband was working a ton, I only got outside once for a run. After melting down into a sometimes-I-can’t-even-stand-the-sight-of-you confrontation with my treadmill, I decided to name him Newman. Say it with me like Seinfeld: NEWman!

Monday – 7.5 miles, avg 8:13. Felt slow and tired. Luckily, I had a relatively easy workout on tap–5x600m at 5k pace (6:53). Did the first four 600m reps, then turned the last one into an 800m.

Tuesday – easy 4 with Newman the Treadmill (again). You know it’s almost time to taper when you start to freak out about every little niggle. My left quad and glute were cranky, so I took it super slow and tried not to freak out about the terrifying monster named IT Band Flareup that might be hiding underneath the treadmill.

Wednesday – 8 miles with hill intervals. Was still fighting off some pain in the left glute, so what I’d planned to be a difficult hill workout turned into a short, easy one. Ran a couple miles to warm up, then 4 sets of: 90 sec at 6% incline marathon pace, 60 sec jog/flat, 60 sec at 7% incline marathon pace, 2 minute jog/flat. That got me to around 5 miles. Did one more set and then alternated between running tempo pace, marathon pace and jogging for the last 3 miles.

Thursday – Off

Friday – 16 miles. OUTSIDE! I was so warm on this run that I took a layer of gloves off and opened the vents on my jacket! It was about 25 and snowing lightly, and the trail was mostly packed snow with very little ice. So just about the best conditions I can ask for this time of year! After so many runs on the treadmill, I needed every snowy step of this 16 miler. I did still feel some pain in my glute and hamstring on the left again, but nothing too bad.

Saturday – Off. Invested in one of these beauties–best 15 bucks I’ve spent in a while. Rolled the heck out of every last muscle in the chain and felt much better.

Sunday – 6 miles, avg 8:34. Got up early to see the hubs off to work and get in a run with Newman before the kids woke up.

I still can’t believe I’m closing in on two weeks until the race. My legs believe it, though, as they are so wicked tired right now. And if hamstrings could talk, I’m pretty sure they’d say…..”Bring on the taper!”

Recovering corporate hamster-wheeler turned Alaskan hausfrau, mother of two and running enthusiast. Kind of a June Cleaver in tempo shorts...minus the makeup and vacuum. Will run to great lengths to get a moment of peace.
