Barley’s Training Log 12.20.2015

Lastย week started early Monday morning. I got up to run (which is rare these days), but realized I would rather take advantage of the 65 degrees in the afternoon (in NY….on December 14…). Instead of going back to bed (which would 99% of the time happen) I made coffee, did laundry, put dishes away, and kicked off the week with some yoga and core work. Pigs flew people, they really did.

The middle of the week was a bit all over the place. Tuesday and Thursday evenings we had events to attend, a holiday party and Thursday we saw the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra holiday show. Which left Wednesday as the mid week, “I don’t want to do anything evening”.

I had penciled in a 5k for this weekend, but ultimately decided against it. Quite a few reasons played into that, and I think it was smart. I still have that $25, I got my long run out of way while Brian was working, and I also just really didn’t feel like racing.

So, not a very exciting week but a consistent one at the least. It feels good to have my mileage be ‘easy’ and feel good- but also increasing at the same time. I’m ready to start adding more, but I know that gradual is the smart way to do it for me personally. I’ve stayed healthy and seem improvements because have avoided drastic increases or changes in anything over the last few years. The miles will come as Boston training starts ‘officially’ in 2 weeks.

Monday: (AM)19 minutes core/yogaย (PM)6ish mile run + Strides, followed by 10 minutes of Loop band exercises and dynamic stretching.

Tuesday: Pre-work run, 6ish miles total with 4 at MP.

Wednesday: Unplanned rest day. Brian made me a good dinner, we relaxed, wrapped presents, watched the USA Soccer game(Abby Wambach is a Rochester native) and played games throwing popcorn for the dogs to catch. Quality time at home beat recovery miles, no shame.

Thursday: 8 Mile treadmill progression run. First mile 8:21, last 6:31 (7:15 avg.)

Friday: 6.1 mile treadmill recovery run + 20 minutes of core & back strength work

Saturday: 14 mile treadmill run (5 recovery paced, 9 easy progression)

Sunday: 6ish mile recovery run outside in the evening.

Week Totals: 47.6 miles running, 3 fitness workouts

Beers Drank: Shiner Holiday Cheer, Heavy Seas Peg Leg Imperial Stout, Guinness

This week should be a good one with running and the holidays. We are still having unseasonably warm weather here and it’s making training less tricky for the time being. Although, I admit I wouldn’t mind a little white Christmas!

  1. 14 miles on treadmill – impressive! In this season of running around, I think base building (over racing) is the way to go.
