I’ve found that, for me, when I’m coming back from a longer layoff (whether it’s due to injury or illness or just plain old life chaos), there’s two challenges that I face: regaining lost fitness (or regaining enough fitness to make running enjoyable again) and getting back into the habit of running on a regular basis. Right now, I’m really struggling with getting back into the habit of it. When the alarm goes off in the morning to run before class, I find myself with a severe case of the “I don’t wannas” and hitting snooze until, oops! I guess I don’t have time to run. A decision that, as soon as it’s past the point of no return, I never really feel good about. Especially since I’m typically awake enough to get up and run when that first alarm goes off… I just don’t feel like getting out of bed yet.
While this coming week will be a bit easier as I have Wednesday – Friday off, I’ll still need to work on getting back into the habit of going straight from my PJs to my running clothes to the roads on days that I’m running. Sure, on an off day I could run later in the day, but experience tells me that a run put off ends up not happening. I’ll just enjoy the fact that I get to sleep in a bit before lacing up those running shoes.
In more positive news, I ran a 5k over the weekend. Not only was it my first race since Labor Day, but it’s also the furthest I’ve run since Labor Day. Clearly I have some work to do before the trail ultra comes up in June.
Monday: Rest due to oversnoozing
Wednesday: Missed my run due to oversnoozing, but hit up a step class with a friend that evening. It kicked my butt, but in a good way.
Friday: Rest due to oversnoozing
Saturday: 5k in 34:24. Considering how little I’ve run lately, I’ll take it. Now I have something concrete to improve on.
