As I sit in my hotel room in North Dakota, I’m mourning the loss of yet another toenail and a rather dismal running week.
Losing toenails is expected (despite my super-awesome shoe-tieing technique which prevented them in my last up and downhill marathon). The dismal running week wasn’t.
I’ve been alluding to some hamstring pain and it reached a fever pitch (of pain) after my long run on Saturday. I made a trip to my massage therapist and it helped a ton (I limped in and virtually waltzed out), but I still needed to take this week easy for recovery and because I’m still feeling some pain. I can run, but I’ve had to shorten my stride considerably and I’m way slower. I’ve also been unusually tired at the gym this week, in part because of the injury, but also because I have a ton going on with work and school. All good stuff, but a lot.
What does a dismal week look like?
Sunday: No running, 30 minutes of cross-training.
Monday: 9 miles, hills (my pace is way slower than normal), arms/core at night
Wednesday: 15 miles, easy (this was my long run for the week, since I’m in North Dakota for school this weekend)
Thursday: 60 minutes, elliptical
Friday: 8 miles, tempo run (also much slower than normal tempo runs)
Saturday: 3 miles, felt like I was running through mud.
I’m also not feeling up to weight training at night when I get home from work, which I’ve GOT to do. I only did it once this week, which is better than nothing, but still not where I need to be.
Total miles: 35
I still met my mileage goal from my training plan, but none of the miles felt good. I’m taking it easy, fitting in more physical therapy, and hoping for a better week!
