5 Signs Running is Taking Over Your Holidays

For the most part, we’re all in the same boat here: we know that we have a running problem and we’re not really afraid to admit it. However, we have it totally under control. It’s not like it’s taking over the rest of our lives… or is it? Here are five signs that your passion for running might be getting a little out of hand this holiday season:

1) In your house, Santa doesn’t get milk and cookies. He gets Gu and Gatorade. After all, delivering gifts all over the world is like the ultimate ultramarathon – he’s got to stay fueled up and well-hydrated!

2) Your Christmas stockings have been replaced by old running shoes. Your partner would say something, but they’re just happy to have the closet space back.

3) There are more medals than ornaments on your Christmas tree. Ornaments can be surprisingly expensive. And breakable, which is a problem if you have cats or small children. Race medals are free and indestructible. It just makes good sense.

4) All of the gifts under your tree are wrapped in old race bibs. What? It’s festive if they’re all holiday dash bibs, right? Plus, nothing says fun like watching family members trying to tear into Tyvek…

5) Your first thought when reviewing your company holiday schedule is not family togetherness, but how many extra miles you can get in that week. Time off work means extra time to get in some longer weekday runs, right? Sure, as long as the rest of your family doesn’t mind doing all of the cooking, cleaning, shopping, gift wrapping, baking, and decorating.

We’re not saying that these are bad things, we’re just saying you might want to try and keep things a bit more balanced this season. Sure, head out for an extra-long Christmas day run, but be prepared to be on clean-up duty after the big holiday dinner that night.

Cinnamon here!  This awesome Licorice post originally ran a little over a year ago, on December 14, 2012.  All is going great in Saltyville; the holiday season has been a fun but very very busy for us salty sisters.  Between family engagements, squeezing in running and three little kids off their schedules and an unplanned, ridiculous mutual addiction to a My Little Pony game Salty and I just about had the spice kicked out of us and this break has been so nice! 

With a little help from the rest of the gang, we’re still in the process of reviewing entries for the Race Report Challenge, and I’m very excited to report that our techies will be ready within the next week or two.  I wish I could have done long sleeve so I could sport it right off the bat, but then again these babies were made to race! I can’t wait to unveil them to the Salty community!

In a previous life, I worked on computers and spent all day sitting. Thanks to running, I've rebooted my career and am now a running and triathlon coach and soon-to-be physical therapist. I've also got the mind and spirit of an elite trapped in the body of a back-of-the-packer.

  1. Haha – this is great. I admit to being totally guilty of #5. Any time I have holiday time or time off I think about how much more time I’ll have to run. 🙂

  2. Ha! Great read! I definitely looked forward to my husband being off work and coming to his parents for the holidays which allows me to run more as the watch our little guy (3 months now). I can’t wait to take him on some runs with me in a couple months!
