Cayenne’s Training Log 01.01.17

Cayenne’s Training Log 01.01.17

Cayenne Posted by Cayenne on January 2, 2017 4 Comments

Monday: off

I felt like I was getting sick but it went away luckily.

Tuesday: Long run

15 miles (7:47)

I thought it might be crazy with the holidays during the weekend so I did a long run instead of a speed workout.

push ups, planks

Wednesday: Run

9 miles (8:11)

elliptical, arms, abs

Thursday: Tempo

1 mile warm up, 5 miles at tempo, 1 mile cool down

It was cold and very windy.  I never run super fast in the neighborhoods but did what I could.  Splits were 7:59, 7:05, 7:05, 6:53, 6:59, 6:59, and an 8:25 cool down.  The cool down mile was my fav.

Friday: Run

6 miles (7:52)

light arms, abs

Saturday:  Run serc-group-run-2

8 miles (7:55)

Another hilly group run.  I only did 8 miles of it this time.

Sunday: off

I wish I had run but I was tired and a little hungover to be honest!

Happy New Year!

I did not do as many miles this week.  I am using the excuse that I am taking a lower mileage week before marathon training starts.  😀

Total miles: 45

2nd easy run: 7.5 miles (8:22) This was a group run to see the Christmas lights display.  It was cold but fun!

Wednesday: X Train

1 hr elliptical, 30 min bike

arms, abs

Thursday: Tempo

4 mile warm up, 2 X 1.58 mile loop, both at exactly the same pace (6:33), 2 mile cool down

It was cold and a little windy but not snowy or icy at least.

Friday: Run

8.3 miles (8:02)

push ups, planks

legs (I have neglected these exercises lately)

I recently started adding Fridays as an easy run day.  I still have no mileage plan, just running at random.

Saturday: Long runserc-group-hilly-run

13 miles (8:01)

Extremely hilly group run course.  It was a great workout.

Sunday: off

Merry Christmas!

I had some good workouts but no real plan until my marathon training plan starts in two weeks.

Total miles: 51ish

Which is Harder: Labor or a Marathon?

Which is Harder: Labor or a Marathon?

Parsley Posted by Parsley on January 2, 2017 23 Comments

imageWhich is harder: going through labor or racing a marathon? Why is this an age-old question? Maybe people compare them because they seem like similar events. Both require dedication, as well as physical and mental stamina. They take months of preparation and are an accomplishment to finish. Now that I have run over a dozen marathons and given birth to three kids, I realize there’s no comparison!

Birth is a pretty common occurrence and apparently, we humans were born to run. Billions of women around the world have delivered throughout time, it can’t be that hard, can it? My sister, who is not an athlete, delivered three large babies without pain medication. My dad, who has obviously never had a baby, is running ultras in his 70s. Both advised me labor wouldn’t be an issue compared to my running experiences.

Not everyone can run a marathon, and certainly not everyone can run a fast marathon. So that must be the harder physical event, right? Oh, I was so wrong! Read more >>

Readers Roundtable: Running in the New Year

Readers Roundtable: Running in the New Year

Salty Posted by Salty on January 2, 2017 23 Comments

Happy New Year!Have you committed to your New Year shake cleanse yet? Riiiiiiight. While the rest of the world needs a new year and intense, meme-induced motivation to do  … well … anything, apparently, what does the New Year mean for runners?

Some of us use the new year as a challenge to try something new or to make a drastic change. Others, like Pumpkin, who ran over 1000 miles in 2016, will use it as an opportunity to double down on a long-standing goal. But there are plenty of runners for whom January 1 is just another day on the training schedule.

How about you? Is it a time for big change resolutions? Is it a time to be better about that daily core work and foam rolling? Or is it simply the start of another year of badassery?

Tell us: What does a new year mean for you?

✮And join us every Monday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Twitter for #SaltyChat where we’ll discuss the Roundtable topic and so much more! ✮

Olive’s Boston Training Log-1.1.17

Olive’s Boston Training Log-1.1.17

Olive Posted by Olive on January 1, 2017 2 Comments

It’s been over a month since my last training log, and I’ve enjoyed lots of family time and taught lots of group fitness classes. But now it’s time to get back on the horse, because Boston is just around the corner!

I’ll be running Boston with my best running friend who moved to California. We want to enjoy the experience, so I won’t be going for a PR. However, I’d like to be fit going in since she’s pretty fit too! I expect to finish somewhere in the low 3:30s. I’m using the Hanson Marathon method since I enjoyed it so much leading up to my most recent half.

Monday– 7 treadmill miles while taking care of a sick kid. 8:15 pace

Tuesday-Treadmill tempo-1 mile warmup, 8 x 600 (.375 on the ‘mill) with .125 recovery, .25 walk cooldown. Later taught 2 classes. Speed intervals at 6:30 pace.

Wednesday– 6 easy miles, no watch.

Thursday-killer day. Taught 5 classes, and squeezed in a tempo treadmill run-2 mile warmup, 6 at goal marathon pace (7:35ish), 1 cooldown. 9 total.

Friday-rest!

Saturday-10 miles, no watch. Later taught 2 classes and ran/walked a short way with my daughter and dog.

Mom/daughter/dog run.
Mom/daughter/dog run.

Sunday- 6 easy.

Total-43.25 miles, 9 classes.
