I recently moved to Boulder, Colorado--the mecca of healthy lifestyle and endurance training. I love to run, tri, train, eat good chocolate, drink good rum, and laugh (a lot). I am a CPA by trade and work for Newton Running, headquartered in downtown Boulder!

Well Salties, I had BIG plans for getting back into running and training this week, but my body had a different plan in mind.  On Tuesday, I became ill and ended up in the hospital for 2 days, then I spent the rest of the week resting and easing back into things.   Fortunately, everything seems fine, but I do need to have some additional tests done throughout the month to make sure I’m 100%.

Sunday:  Lift, then first run since Boston.  3 miles with the last mile @ 7:39.  Felt pretty good.  2,250 yards at the pool in the evening  (pretty slow).

Monday:  Ran to rec center at lunch, then lifted.

Tuesday: Ugh!  Woke up in the middle of the night with stomach issues and felt sick.  Decided around 4:00 am to ditch my planned run and slept in.  Woke up around 7:00 to get ready for work, felt dizzy and lightheaded.  Blacked out and fainted while in the shower.  Had shortness of breath, chest pains, ringing ears, and I could not stop sweating!  I was admitted to the ER immediately after going to an Urgent Care.  At first, they thought I had a heart attack, but further tests showed that wasn’t the case, although my EKGs were abnormal.  I had lots of tests and had lots of blood taken.  I wasn’t allowed to walk or get up without assistance for fear of fainting.  I got no sleep because they kept waking me to take my blood pressure and more blood.  I had some tests done, but nothing conclusive on what happened.

Wednesday:  Tests, tests, and more tests!  The doctors wanted to make sure my heart was functioning properly, and they were overly cautious given my family history.  (My parents have 4 heart attacks between both of them).  Thankfully, I was discharged late in the evening, and all I wanted to do was sleep.  I was starting to get antsy laying around in the hospital bed, not being able to do anything.  Fortunately, they let me start walking to my tests.

Thursday:  Rest Day.

Friday:  Nice walk/jog of 3 miles in about 40 minutes.  Returned back to work.

Saturday:  Light lift + 3 miles.  Bike commuted around Boulder.

Weekly Totals:

Running:  11.7

Biking:  11.9

Swimming:  2,250 yards

Weights:  1:40

I’m so glad your tests didn’t show a heart attack, and that you’re feeling better! Do the docs know what caused it?

They have no idea what happened, other than my blood pressure probably dropped. It was low when I was admitted. I go back for some tests later this week. funny thing…. once they figured out my heart was ok, they said I could resume normal activity. I thought that was odd to tell me I could go back to normal after these issues. Thanks for your note!
