I’m aiming for zen, to be ok with everything and be who I am today – I’m talking the full acceptance of the here and now. Or something. I wrote a whole series of posts on comebacks and I still struggle with confidence, feelings of intense frustration and feeling like I have Mt. Everest to climb to get into shape and start cranking out PRs. The one thing that’s been really helping me is this mantra:

It’s just a matter of time.  

“Wow. Friend x is getting so much faster. I could never run that pace.”

It’s just a matter of time.  

“I used to run faster than this pace for so many more miles no problem.”

It’s just a matter of time.  

“Will there ever come a time when these hills don’t kill me?”

It’s just a matter of time.  

“Will these morning runs get easier? Will my speedy legs ever come back? Will I ever meet my goals?”

It’s just a matter of time.  

In the past, my strength is gutting out the training. Kids not sleeping? I get it done. Legs hurting? I get it done. Busy? Done. Sick? Done. Horrible awful weather? Done. I always get the training in. I might not be able to hit paces, but I bust my ass and am definitely on the training log perfectionist end of the spectrum. This is a strength and I can count on my hard work. But remember, there’s more to running success than hard work.

Hard work + patience + consistency = running success.

What I need to work on and what has been the biggest impediment to my success as a runner is consistency.  Patience is definitely a struggle for me at times, but overall I get it. My biggest problem is consistency. It’s not that I am not mentally or physically capable, it’s just that my running life collided with my procreating life and I’ve taken every other year off since I started training! So for me, what I need to do is plug along. I don’t need to get hung up on particular workouts or feeling like crap one day. It doesn’t mean much. For me, if I can still be doing this in two years, you better believe I’ll be one fast masters runner!

It’s just a matter of time.  

Mon: 7.25 early a.m. easy with 2 x 10s hill sprints. I am actually enjoying the early Monday no watch runs!

Tue: 9 with track. I had a great workout for right now. 400 (91); 800 (3:02); 1200 (4:36); 1600 (6:13); 1200 (4:36) with half-time rest and then 6 x 200 (42, 42, 41, 40, 40, 41).

Wed: 6 miles on the elliptical

Thu: 7.5 early a.m. miles with 6 x :20 strides. Was supposed to be 7:20 but was more like 8:00. I have really struggled to run faster on Thursday early mornings for some reason.

Fri: 8.25 early a.m. tempo. Drove to a well lit neighborhood with a nice 1.75 mile side street loop at 5:30. Warmed up 2 miles with 4 pick-ups to get moving and then did the tempo: 6:53, 7:00, 6:53, 6:52, 6:45. It was supposed to be 6:45 pace, but again, I am really struggling to hit paces in the morning. I look at my watch on the thirds – so twice during each mile only and just try to go by effort. The first mile seemed reasonable, but then when I looked at my watch at 1/3 into the second mile it said 7:11. EEK! I hustled to get it down to 7:00 and then really tried to get the pace down. I had to haul over the last 1/3 of a mile on number 5 to get on pace.

Later on Friday morning I did 5 super easy with the double stroller and a good friend!

Sat: 6 easy with the single stroller – wow! Cake after pushing the double!

Sun: 14 mile long run averaging 7:49. Started on trails and then jumped on the road with a friend. It was hot and we were not feeling it. Had to run up a huge monster hill and I pushed up that and then decided to push the pace until I reached the parking lot and some water – I told myself I could do the last 1.75 or so as a cool down if I ran a good 12th mile. Ran 6:47! After that the last 1.75 were under 7:30 pace and felt easy!

Total: 57 running and 6 elliptical

    Love that mantra! I’d also love to be able to consistently hit your current paces. :)

    I really relate to you on the thoughts you’ve posted above. You need to give yourself so much credit for all you do – having 3 kids in the short time you did AND still being able to run at the level you do is nothing short of AMAZING – truly. I wanted to blog for this site in large part because of the inspiration you have given me over the past couple years, and I continue to be full of admiration for you attitude and approach.
