An ultrarunner and a full-time doctoral student, I'll be running across America in 2015 to raise awareness for sexual violence and prevention! #2015RunAcrossAmerica

I’m not going to lie to y’all.  It’s been a tough time in Cilantro-land, and it has nothing to do with running, training, or ultramarathons, so I’ll spare you the details.  I’ll just say this: grad school is hard, my doctoral program is tough, and I am too poor for school.  In more pleasant news, I re-discovered cauliflower and have eaten it every day for two weeks.  Don’t pretend like that isn’t fascinating information.

Although this training log is a few days late, I’m still having a pleasant taper, mainly because tapering for an ultra is nothing like tapering for a marathon.  Last week I took three days off and still logged 46 miles.  This week the mileage drops much lower, though, so I think I’ll start to get antsy around Thursday.  In reality this taper couldn’t have come at a better time – as life got crazy, I suddenly had a few more hours every week to get life done. Quite fortuitous.  The weather has also been pleasant in these parts too, and I’ve been treated to intermittent temps in the 30’s which is almost like waking up in Hawaii minus everything else awesome about Hawaii.

Last week’s run:

Sunday: Rest day.  I love a little rest with my coffee.

Monday: 10 miles, around a 9 minute pace.  I got to run outside (yippee!) and after the 32 miler on Friday and the 12 miles on Friday, this felt surprisingly good.

Tuesday: 10 miles.  I took these really easy, and averaged a 10 minute pace.  I’m not exactly sure why, but I think I was mentally not feeling a run.

Wednesday: Rest day.  I had to present at our university’s scholarly forum at 9:30 am and have become such a typical doctoral student that I couldn’t make myself get up early enough to run.  For shame.

Thursday: 6 miles, speed work.  On the treadmill. Nothing special about these.  I did them.  Then I went home.

Friday: 20 miles.  My last long run of the training cycle, I relished every second of this run like it was my boyfriend leaving for the summer.  Note:  I do not have a boyfriend and am not looking.  That would overly complicate my overly complicated life.  But you get what I’m saying here.

Saturday:  Unscheduled rest day.  I was supposed to run five, but was feeling a bit beat up from running and life and I took the day off.  I also took Sunday off.  In hindsight, two days off in a row really messes with my head.  I need to do some cross-training or walking to stay sane in future cases.

Weekly totals: 46 miles, 3 heads of cauliflower.

Race day is getting real.  I try to avoid thinking about it because I’m afraid, but at some point I’m going to have to start packing.  And find a place to stay.  And figure out where the race starts.  I guess that’s what taper week is for, right?  To use the time I would have been running to think about running?  I’m on it.

Cilantro, out.
