Even though I’m technically not working, things have been busy. Really…well, crazy is more the word. I have a lot to do, but it’s more about the tension than the time, and it’s definitely impacting my running.
I’ve been working out some heavy stuff on the emotional front, and also suddenly had two different friends ask for my help in respective times of crisis. My visit home, though often fun, was more taxing than relaxing. My running club had a crazy melodrama. A dear friend is leaving town. Two jobs presented themselves then fell through. My current (part time) job keeps canceling days of work. Money is tight, pressure is high, and my stress level is climbing along with the thermometers here in the New York City summer heat.
With my brain tangled in knots the way it is, things like speedwork and tempo runs aren’t very appealing; I just want to go out and do slow mileage and give myself time to think and heal and solidify my ideas. But no excuses! Although I did rearrange the schedule a bit to give myself more rest time after my long run, each day I laced up and managed to complete every scheduled workout.
I made the mistake of sleeping in on speedwork day, which got me to the track at about 10 am. I hit my third 800 at high noon, and the heat was so intense I just couldn’t nail the times the way I wanted to, but I wasn’t too far off. Those 3:30 800s came out at 3:35, 3:38, 3:41, and 3:39. Of course, the moment I finished my cool-down and sat down to stretch, the sky opened up into a torrential downpour!
I was drenched and had to bike home in it, but I couldn’t have been happier!

T – 45 minutes Speedwork (with my team) in the PM – 4x 1000 m repeats @ 4:25. 20 min warmup, 20 min cd (about 8 miles total)
W – Speedwork at the track in the AM: 2×400 @ 1:40, 4×800 @ 3:38, 2×400 @ 1:40. 8 miles total. Sweaty sweaty hash r*n in the PM, about 4.5 miles. 12.5 for the day.
Th – 30 minutes
F – 5mi tempo run in Prospect Park. Again, it was super hot, and my 8 minute mile goals came out evenly at 8:12 each. Since 8:12 is my actual race pace, I’m not unpleased! 8 total.
Sat – off
Total, about 41 miles
