I am bummed because after running a breakout 3:23 marathon at Chicago last fall, I was really hoping to up the ante and go for another PR this fall in Columbus. Maybe even 3:20.
But it is not going to happen. I’ve had lots of little setbacks, and as I’ll expound on more later this week, I am now hurt.
There. I said it.
I have to admit that I am not sure what I will do this summer/fall. I am bummed though because not only am I out for the Columbus Marathon, I also do the Capitol Mile every year around my birthday and there is NO WAY that is going to happen.
I think I have about 3 weeks to a month for recovery and then I can start over. Maybe I can do a half in November? I am really not sure.
So let’s start with the here and now:
Monday-Wednesday were rest days. My left side hurt like crazy. I couldn’t sleep at all as any touch on my left side was brutal. During the day, shoulder pain and groin pain ruled. Not good.
Thursday was the 4th of July and I was going to be damned if I did’t run. I ran 3.5 miles (9:00 pace) and walked a little over a mile to stretch my legs. My left inner thigh/groin were both stabby and unruly. D@mmit.
Friday – rest and work day for me. I tried to ignore it, but my neck and upper back were starting to tighten up all afternoon.
Saturday my shoulder pain turned to bona-fide back pain and it hurt to even take in a full breath. My leg bruise was healing significantly, but this set back was hard. Quite uncharacteristically, I was weepy, pissed off, and just …. off. Thankfully I had some good friends and wine to commiserate with on Saturday night.
Sunday I was still hurty, but it wasn’t quite so bad. And I determined my pity party was over and needed to get moving. The whole family and I went on a 3+ mile walk (some riding bikes – NOT me!). It was nice to stretch the legs and I am definitely moving upward.
Total: 3.5 miles running; 4+ miles walking.
It’s not much, but believe it or not, I feel it is progress……
