I am pleased to report that I turned a big corner this week. My motivation is reemerging and I am starting to feel much more fit. It has taken longer than usual this season with illness and a few set backs, so I am embracing this corner whole-heartedly!
Ironically enough, I say this after I completely fell off my training schedule at the beginning of the week. My husband, who is also a lawyer, left his law firm and started his own law firm with one of his partners. It is very exciting for us and resulted in a lot of busy work and my support which had to take priority. We’ve been working for weeks to get everything ready, so it is great to be off and running!
Monday is my scheduled rest day. I really should have run anyway since I knew that I had a busy couple of days coming up, but I didn’t. (Bad call, Mint.) Monday night, my husband and I got together with my sister, brother-in-law, cousin and cousin-in-law. It is an annual tradition as my parents always take all of our kids to do a big NYE party. Very fun. As usual, we stayed up WAY too late and had WAY too much fun, but it was a wonderful way to bring in 2013.
Tuesday I was tired and rather unmotivated. I was also relegated to the treadmill. So instead of doing my 70 minute workout with tempo intervals, I decided to take it easy and run Wednesday’s scheduled 50 minute run. 5.85 miles (8:47 pace).
Wednesday was crazy between my work and my husband’s big announcement. No run. This meant I was now behind schedule by 70 minutes that I had to make up in my next 4 runs (or lose 8 miles for the week).
Thursday I finally got in gear for my tempo intervals. I ran 85 minutes with 4 x 5 minutes at 7:17 pace with one minute recoveries. Because I was on the treadmill, I started each 5 minute interval at 7:19 pace, then bumped it up to 7:13 about half way through. This run made me remember that it is SO much easier to run on the treadmill when you have some uptempo work to throw in.
Friday I was on the treadmill once again. Again I bumped up my scheduled time to make up for Wednesday. I ran 70 minutes; 8.1 miles; 8:41 pace. I threw in a few striders at the end at a 6:00 pace. It is NOT easy for me to run that fast on the treadmill. It feels awkward and just off. Hopefully I’ll get used to it soon.
Saturday I was super rushed due to a busy day, but I got to run outside! Woo hoo! 8.3 miles at 8:55 pace.
Sunday was a more leisurely day and I waited until 2:30 to do my long run. The sun was shining, it was in the upper 20s, and I felt like a million bucks! I faded a little the last couple of miles, but that is normal when I start building long runs again. I ran 14.75 miles with a few striders at the end. 8:50 pace
Total: 47 miles.
It was a light front-end of the week, back-ended with lots of miles. But I hit my scheduled workout time, am feeling great and am looking forward to starting speed work next week.
